A decisive key factor in the electrification of mobility being pursued worldwide lies in improving the performance of battery systems. In addition to the battery cell, the structure of the battery pack is also an essential component for optimization opportunities. HERA (Heat Energy Recapturing Accumulator) is developing a disruptive approach to structural improvement of automotive battery packs. The battery cells are integrated into a newly designed structure and surrounded by a heat storage medium. The storage medium fundamentally changes the thermal management of batteries. The waste heat from the cells during rapid charging or vehicle operation is temporarily stored and can be released back to the cell when the vehicle is parked. This leads to longer battery life, range increases, reduction of manufacturing costs, optimization of fast charging capability, prevention of battery fires, weight savings and very good recyclability.
