Inventions and IP

Invention: yes or no?

In our individual inventor consultations, we answer this question and plan the next steps on the path to innovation. Together, we analyze the technology to determine whether and to what extent it is IP (intellectual property). In addition, we discuss the best ways to protect and commercialize the technology.

All members of RWTH or UKA can exclusively receive information in a non-binding consultation before the patenting clock, with all its deadlines, is set in motion with a written invention disclosure. Until then, the invention should be kept confidential. Even a conversation with a person not affiliated with the university can be considered detrimental to novelty and thus hinder the patenting of the invention. In the case of a startup idea based on RWTH IP (e.g., arising from a thesis or a research project), an invention consultation is fundamentally necessary.

As part of our invention consultation, the technology can be discussed together in peace and quiet. As part of the discussion, we provide initial feedback on patenting and exploitation opportunities. We then discuss topics such as

  • Formal requirements for an invention disclosure
  • Raising awareness of risks and avoidable mistakes
  • Options for further development and financial viability
  • Patenting strategies and regulations in Germany and abroad
  • Ways to achieve the best possible benefit for inventors, professorships and universities
  • IP-related issues, including planned technology spin-offs
  • Legal framework conditions

If the technology is software (computer program), further specific aspects must be considered and clarified in advance. Further information can be found in our guidelines.
